Perimenopause and Menopause

what is Perimenopause and menopause?

Perimenopause is the stage of life when a woman’s body begins to transition towards menopause. During this time, changes in hormone levels can cause changes to your menstrual cycle, mood, sleep and physical health. Perimenopause can last for several years and look different to everyone.

Menopause is when you haven’t had a menstrual cycles consecutively for 12 months. It marks the end of the reproductive years and is a natural part of ageing. While menopause is a normal stage of life the physical and emotional changes that can occur during this time can sometimes feel difficult to manage.

What can effect perimenopause and menopause have on women’s mental health and wellbeing?

The hormonal changes that occur during perimenopause and menopause can have an impact on your mental health and overall wellbeing. These changes can effect your mood, emotions, sleep and how you cope with everyday life.

You may experience increased anxiety, low mood, irritability, mood changes, difficulty concentrating or feeling more overwhelmed than usual. Changes to sleep and physical symptoms such as hot flushes, fatigue or changes to your menstrual cycle can also affect how you’re feeling emotionally.

For some women, these changes can feel unexpected or difficult to understand, particularly if they’re affecting relationships, work or day-to-day life. Understanding these changes and having the right support can help you to navigate this stage of life and develop strategies to support your mental health and wellbeing.

When to seek support?

It is normal to experience changes in mood, emotions and wellbeing during menopause and perimenopause. However, if these changes are starting to feel difficult to manage or are affecting your relationships, work or day-to-day life, it may be helpful to seek support.

You may benefit from support if you’re experiencing ongoing anxiety, low mood, irritability, feeling overwhelmed, difficulties with your sleep, or changes in your confidence and sense of self.

Seeking support can give you a space to understand the changes your experiencing, develop strategies to manage difficult emotions and support your overall mental health and wellbeing during this stage in life.

How can psychology help?

Psychology can provide a safe and supportive space to talk about the changes you’re experiencing during menopause and perimenopause. It can help you better understand your emotions, manage difficult feelings and develop strategies to support your mental health.
